CECA 2006 notes…
Keynote - Done by David Warlick, a great speaker who has a lot to say about literacy and how we should incorporate internet into that portion of learning. It was really great to see the idea’s he has on how teachers should integrate technology into the classroom. Will have to watch his blog and see about talking with others at the school.
Ipod in education / warlick one - The Ipod in education seminar was pretty boring for me. I was hoping for ideas on how to incorporate podcasting into education not just showing me what apple has to offer on itunes and how to podcast.
Podcasting server - (they did not record this session LOL.) Apple feels that podcasting is audio, enhanced audio, video and PDF files. RSS “really simple syndication” which is an xml formatted file that describes and formats the podcast. “curl” in osx desplays the source of a page. Here we go again with promotion of .Mac… yeppy. Profcast will record audio and slides etc on a mac to an enhanced podcast file. Interesting the presenter just made it sound like hosting your own domain to do this is very hard and suggested using dat mac unless your “really technical”….Talking about Tiger version 10.4.3 with podcasting ability…Showing the simple aspect of using iWeb to create a podcast. Suggested transmit as an ftp client for osx. I can agree with that. He is explaining SFTP to the crowd, sort of funny. talking about leopard server….podcast producer, moving the creation of podcasting to purely server based capture. Interesting. podcast.nox.org - info on podcasting.
OSS integration - Larry Cuban “Oversold and Underused”, Doc Searls ” Technology before 5th grade?”, David Walick stuff. Talking about software and how Free software and Outsourcing is what they use. go2web20.net is site dedicated to linking to web 2.0 companies. Clint feels that outsourcing technology makes more sense because it allows us to use newer technology for less. Concerns: Control, Data privacy, internet connection, cost. Over all this was the best session in the conference that i went too besides the keynote but it seemed like the material was too much for the session time. I would have loved to have seen this as more of a forum then a presentation. To bad there is no conference that i know of that does forums like that. One thing that did interest me immensely was his idea of creating custom linux bootable CD’s for students. Imagine giving them custom environments they could take home and use for school work.
Misc. - The first few podcasting are by apple which seem to be all about selling their “warez”. sort of disappointing as i would rather have more information about use in education and tech info about all aspects rather then Apples version.
Sniffer for Netware
This is a sniffer to run on netware. You can use it to capture packets for testing and looks like you can read it with wireshark. Also it plugs into Netware Remote Manager (AWESOME)!!
Interesting fact about Latency and fiber long distance.
“you accrue about 8-10ms of latency for every 1,000 miles the light signal travels”
Interesting all Gaming network Discussion
Good Ref on latency : It’s the Latency, Stupid
